How Did We Get Here? Where Are We Headed? What kind of worldview can create sustainable flourishing? A dialogue with Jeremy Lent

Next Sunday, June 25th, at 10AM PST,  I’ll be joined by author and “Integrator” Jeremy Lent. We’ll probe some of the deeper questions emerging from Jeremy’s recent book, The Patterning Instinct, which is a fascinating, timely investigation of the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current crisis of sustainability.

Jeremy argues that the same underlying patterns of Western thought that gave us the benefits of science are also driving us to possible catastrophe. I’ll be asking Jeremy to discuss this thesis in more depth, and we’ll explore whether this perspective leads to idealizing other cultures or historical epochs.

Jeremy’s book shows a major contrast between traditional Chinese thought and Western thought. He argues that the dualistic nature of Western thought leads to a split conception of the universe and the human being. Chinese thought, in his view, offers a more integrated worldview. We’ll discuss some of the implications of this, and touch on a fascinating correspondence Jeremy sees between Neo-Confucian cosmology and modern systems thinking. And why he sometimes calls himself an “integrator.”

Finally, I’ll be discussing with Jeremy his own integrative framework called Liology, (“lee-ology”), which, he suggests, offers a worldview that could enable humans to flourish sustainably on our planet. We’ll explore how Liology differs from the mainstream worldview, and how it can be relevant to those of us who are looking for the most skillful way to have a positive impact on the future development of humankind.

About Jeremy Lent

Jeremy Lent is an author whose writings investigate the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current crisis of sustainability. He is founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview, both scientifically rigorous and intrinsically meaningful, that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the earth.

Born in London, England, Lent received a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He initially pursued a career in business, eventually founding an internet startup and taking it public.

Beginning around 2005, Lent began an inquiry into the various constructions of meaning formed by cultures around the world and throughout history. His recently published book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning, traces the deep historical foundations of our modern worldview.

He holds regular community workshops to explore these topics through contemplative and embodied practices in the San Francisco Bay Area.
